If you have no idea how big your tank is, that is normal and it is not a problem. We find the four corners, mark them in the yard and measure, then measure again at the bottom once it is pumped down, and that gives us the gallons. How often should a septic tank be pumped?
Every three to five years for a normal household. Which end of that you sit on depends on how many people are in the house and how big the tank is, and a garbage disposal moves you toward the short end.
Go by the calendar rather than waiting for a sign. By the time a tank is slow to drain or the yard has a soft spot over the field, solids have usually been reaching the drain field for a while, and a drain field costs more to replace than a decade of pump-outs. If you cannot remember your last one, it is time.
What happens during a septic pump-out?
We stir the tank first with the crust buster, a machine that breaks up the crust on top so the solids come out instead of sitting there while the water leaves. Dad and I have not seen one on another truck around here. Pumping a tank down without stirring it leaves half the solids in the tank.
Then we check flow from the house before we leave and tell you what we saw. The big truck holds 3,600 gallons, which means three or four tanks before we have to run to the treatment plant, so we are not leaving your job half done to go dump. If we find a filter, we will ask whether you want it cleaned while the tank is open, and if the lid is buried we will talk to you about a riser so nobody digs again.
