How do I know if the baffle or the filter is the problem?
From inside the house they feel the same: things drain slowly or back up. The difference shows at the tank. A failed baffle lets solids wash out toward the drain field, which is the expensive direction, and a clogged filter just holds everything back, which is annoying but cheap.
We do not ask you to diagnose it. When we open a tank we look at both, and most of the filter cleanings we do started as something we spotted during a routine pump-out and asked about while the lid was already off. A problem we spot during a scheduled pump-out costs you the repair and nothing else.
