When is the right time to add a riser?
The day the tank is already open. If we are out to pump and the lid took digging to reach, that hole has already been paid for once, and putting the riser on before it closes means it never gets paid for again. Same logic if we had to locate the tank: the finding is done, so finish the job.
Adding one on its own day works too, it just means opening the ground once more. That is why we bring risers up while we are standing over your open tank rather than in a follow-up call. The cheap moment to do it is right then, not later.
What does a septic riser do?
A riser is a length of culvert pipe, usually 18 to 36 inches across, fastened to the top of your tank with the lid sitting at ground level. Once it is in, the lid is right there. Nobody digs for your tank again, including us, which is the part that shows up on your bill.
The lid sits at grade, so you can mow the yard right up to it. It usually pays for itself the second time you get pumped, because digging a buried lid is a charge every single visit and a riser is a charge once.
Is a septic riser worth it?
Yes, if your lid is buried, and for restaurants most of all. A restaurant tank gets pumped on a schedule rather than every few years, so digging the lid out every single time adds up fast for them. Once the lid is found and a riser goes on, that step disappears from every future visit.
Houses where nobody knows where the tank is are the other big one. If we have to locate the tank to pump it, that is the right day to put a riser on it, because you are already paying to have it found and open.
