Farms have been most of our business since 2001. The law is simple, and the math surprises people.
The federal field sanitation rule is one toilet and one handwashing station for every 20 hand-labor workers, or any fraction of 20, within a quarter-mile walk. Michigan adopts that rule word for word. Separate men's and women's units are not in the regulation, but we set them that way for any mixed crew and most growers want it, so a crew of 15 men and one woman gets two units on our trucks.

What Harvest Looks Like Out Here
Grand Junction grows tall bush blueberries at a scale few places match, and harvest is our busiest season. There is a road near our shop we call the money mile, a toilet every few hundred feet down both sides for about a mile. Bangor, Covert, Hartford and Decatur run blueberries, apples, asparagus and cucumbers for the brine plants. Gobles has three big Christmas tree farms and we keep units in their fields through harvest and trimming.
Hand wash stations go next to the units for crews handling fresh fruit. If your buyer audits, tell us what they want to see and we will match the setup.
Cleaning is weekly on the route, more when the crew needs it. Everything we put in the tanks is plant based, no formaldehyde. We used to land apply what we pumped on our own farm, so it had to be safe for ground we farmed ourselves.

Farm Sanitation Questions
How many toilets does the field sanitation rule require?
One toilet and one handwashing station for every 20 hand-labor workers or fraction of 20, kept within a quarter-mile walk. It kicks in once 11 or more people are doing hand labor in the field on a given day. Michigan adopts the federal standard, 29 CFR 1928.110, by reference. Separate men's and women's units are not written into that rule, but we send them separate for any mixed crew because growers ask for it and audits look for it, so 15 men and one woman gets two units from us.
What is a GAP unit?
A unit with a hand wash sink for field crews. The rule changed a while back on where the sink has to mount, so ask us what your auditor wants to see and we will set you up with the right combination of units and wash stations.
How often do you clean farm units?
Once a week on the route is standard. Big crews need more. We have one farm with about 25 units that we clean three times a week during harvest, because that is how hard harvest runs them.
Can you service units out in the fields?
Yes. We run a pickup and tank trailer for fields and soft ground, the same rig we use on the golf course. The big trucks stay on the road.
How close does the porta potty have to be to the crew?
Federal field sanitation rules put a toilet within a quarter mile of where a hand-labor crew is working. That is the reason our farm units ride trailers: when the crew moves fields, the unit moves with them, and you stay inside the rule without renting extras you do not need.
